MLI Blankets
MLI blankets provide passive thermal control to a variety of spacecraft, launch vehicles, and instruments in vacuum when there are extreme changes in temperature. We provide a wide range of MLI blankets to the Aerospace community. These products are created using thin films, foils, and fabrics in a combination that minimizes heat transfer from one side to the other. Some common applications are:
- Spacecraft bus structures
- Instrument components on satellites and space vehicles
- Planetary landers and rovers
MMOD Shields
MMOD—or Micrometeoroid Orbital Debris — Shields are specialized hybrid blankets. Their primary function is to cover and protect vulnerable surfaces from high velocity particles while a product or craft is in space. - Protection of vital areas on spacecraft bus structures

Radiators
Aerospace Fabrication personnel can provide specialty coated tapes for use as First Optical Solar Reflectors (FOSR). Our team is experienced in the application and installation of FOSR and similar radiator technologies for use on satellites and other spacecraft. We take great care in the creation and installation of these products to preserve the integrity of the materials for their final use. Some common applications are:
- Radiator surfaces on CubeSats
- Large radiator devices
Sun Shields
AFM offers the option of producing custom sun shields to fit each individual customer’s needs and requirements. We work with you to develop the design of the sun shield based on your test data and requirements. These sun shields are made from specialty coated thin films providing frequency selective transparency in the electromagnetic spectrum. Some common applications are:
- Antenna covers
- Large antenna arrays
High Temperature Plume Shields
The fabricators at AFM are experienced and equipped to create specialized high temperature MLI blankets and plume shields for use around spacecraft and rocket engine nozzles or other extreme high temperature sources. Some common applications are:
- Small thruster plume areas
- Retro rocket shielding
